5 Reasons NOT to Quit BJJ!!!

bjj advice Dec 24, 2022

If you're a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) practitioner, you've probably had times when you've considered quitting the sport. Maybe you've hit a rough patch in your training, or you're feeling discouraged about your progress. Maybe you're just feeling burnt out, or you have other priorities that are taking up your time and energy.

Regardless of the reason, it's normal to feel like quitting BJJ from time to time. However, as difficult as it may seem at the moment, quitting BJJ is generally not the best decision. Here are a few reasons why:

  1. It's a long-term journey: BJJ is not a sport that you can master overnight. It takes time, dedication, and consistent training to make progress and see improvement. If you quit BJJ because you're feeling frustrated or stuck, you may be giving up too soon. Remember that BJJ is a journey – it's not about reaching a destination, but rather about the ongoing process of learning and self-improvement.

  2. Physical and mental benefits: BJJ is much more than just a sport – it's a holistic practice that can benefit you physically, mentally, and emotionally. From improving your fitness and coordination to reducing stress and increasing self-confidence, BJJ has a wide range of benefits that extend far beyond the mat. Quitting BJJ means missing out on all of these benefits, so that's a big no-no right there!

  3. BJJ can be a source of community and support: Even though you are responsible for yourself, BJJ is also a team sport, and your training partners and coaches can become like a second family. You already know this but, training BJJ provides a sense of belonging and a form of support that can be hard to find elsewhere. Quitting BJJ means potentially losing out on these valuable relationships and connections.

  4. BJJ and stress relief: Life can be stressful, and BJJ can be a great outlet for releasing that stress. Whether you're grappling with a tough opponent or just rolling to get your mind off things, BJJ can provide a sense of escape and relaxation that can be hard to find elsewhere. Just remember what problems you are thinking about the last time you were getting choked from the back. Quitting BJJ means that you will be losing out on this valuable meditative outlet for stress relief.

  5. BJJ and self-confidence: BJJ can be a challenging sport, and overcoming those challenges can be incredibly rewarding. As you progress in your training and achieve new milestones, you'll likely find that your self-confidence grows as well. But not too much, because BJJ also keeps the Ego in check! Quitting BJJ means potentially missing out on this boost of self-confidence and the natural regulation of your self-confidence.

Overall, while quitting BJJ may seem like an appealing option at times, it's generally not the best decision, so KEEP on training and share this article with someone who you believe might be considering calling it a day.
